Welcome to CWCH
Salve! Croeso! Welcome to the website of the Cymru Wales Classics Hub. We aim to function as a platform for schools, universities and individuals who are passionate about ensuring the next generation is able to access the wealth of Classical history, culture, and language in Wales.
What We Do
The Cymru Wales Classics Hub - CWCH - which officially launched in October 2015, is an organisation created to promote and support the teaching of Classical history, culture, and language throughout Wales. CWCH aims to revive the study of Classics in the Welsh context particularly, since its challenges are particular to Wales and significantly different from the rest of the UK. This purpose is currently of particular importance considering the ambition of the Welsh Government to further language learning in schools and create a "bilingual plus one" nation. There is no time like the present for developing Classical languages which improve analytical skills, grammar, logical reasoning, and are such fun to learn.
The mission of the organisation, as embodied by the name, CWCH, meaning 'boat' in Welsh, is transmitting and navigating the way to promote and support the teaching and learning of Classical culture and language in Wales.
Studying classics allows students to explore a world of history literature and language, making it an exciting topic to study at all levels. The magic of ancient objects and the thrill of tracing their importance throughout history have inspired people for generations. Enhanced linguistic aptitude, sharp critical skills, excellence in creating and dissecting rhetoric, and a sensitive approach to intercultural issues make Classicists interesting people, a group it’s well worth joining.
Currently, thanks to Classics for All and Classical Association funding, we are developing the role of Classics in the curriculum in Wales. We are also working on translation of resources from English into Welsh. If you are interested in joining this working group, please contact us.
