Hubs: the concept
The principal outline for the scheme is to begin with one secondary school and a few primary schools, where weekly Latin or Greek will be taught either as part of the curriculum or as an extra-curricular activity. There will be university students who will take the part of teaching assistants, thereby giving them work experience as well as giving the teaching staff more support; and an administrator to oversee and liaise between the school and the organisation.
This model will then be replicated across the nation, and the part played by university students in the scheme will bring greater communication between schools and universities. With this greater communication there will hopefully be greater support from one institution to another, providing mutual benefits.
This programme begins in a school in a Communities First area, but hopes to spread the joy of Classics throughout Wales.
Crickhowell High School, Powys
Crickhowell High School was the first school in Wales to receive a grant from Classics for All. The grant will run for two more years. Latin is now offered in all key stages as an extra curricular subject and is growing in popularity. In 2015/16 there will also be Minimus Clubs in two of the local primary schools. Future plans include starting Latin classes for teachers from the local area and inviting other primary schools to join the Minimus Clubs. If anyone is interested in learning more about the availability of Classics in the Crickhowell area, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org (Jayne Treasure).
